Over the period of time, various stage actors like Bal Gandharva, Vishnupant Pagnis, Bhalchandra Pendharkar have performed the lead role of Sharada. Going with the format of Sangeet Natak, play had more than 50 songs, penned and composed by Govind Ballal Deval himself and music attained a cult status over the period of time.
The play "is considered to be a pioneer in social drama in India" and gained the popularity in such a way that when the Child Marriage Restraint Act, proposed by Haribilas Sarda, also known "Sarda Act", was passed in 1929; it was mistaken to be named after the play as "Sharada Act".
संगीत शारदा हे मराठीतील अत्यंत गाजलेलं नाटक. या नाटकाची लोकप्रियता एवढी होती की 'संमतीवयाचा कायदा' याचे नाव 'शारदा कायदा' (sharada act) असे पडले. गंमत अशी की संमतीवयाचा कायदा 1891 साली आला तर नाटक 1899 साली. मराठीतील पहिले सामाजिक नाटक अशी त्याची ख्याती आहे. जरठ-कुमारी (म्हातारा नवरा व अतिशय तरुण बायको) विवाह हा नाटकाचा प्रमुख विषय आहे. नाटकात इतरही अनेक विषय हाताळले आहेत. काही उघडपणे तर काही सूचकतेने. स्वातंत्र्याचा विषय त्यात आहे. कोदंड (नाटकाचा नायक) म्हणतो 'आपआपल्यात भेदभाव वाढत गेल्यामुळं .... शेवटी त्याच राष्ट्राचे दासानुदास झाले आणि या सर्वाला कारण आमचे आम्हीच !' 'रुढी विरुद्ध धर्मशास्त्र' असा एक संघर्ष त्यात आहे.
